Home Bargains is selling lockdown Jane Asher baking boxes

BAKING fans can practise their cake-making skills during lockdown with the Jane Asher baking boxes from Home Bargains.

Many Brits have taken to the kitchen to pass the time while staying at home, although the craze has seen shelves emptied of key ingredients such as eggs and flour.

The discounter has put together the boxes to make sure amateur bakers have everything they need to get started on their homemade masterpieces.

Jane Asher is a range of packets of pre-mixed mixtures that require you to add just a few separate ingredients before putting them in the oven - they're ideal for those who are just starting out.

Each box contains a vanilla sponge mix, chocolate fudge cake mix, lemon cake mix, scone mix, pastry mix and sultanas.

You'll also get tubs of vanilla and chocolate frosting, a pack of three pastry cutters, a spatula, cake tin and 100 cake cases.

What does each box contain

EACH Jane Asher baking box from Home Bargains contains:

  • Jane Asher Vanilla Sponge Mix
  • Jane Asher Chocolate Fudge Cake
  • Jane Asher Lemon Cake Mix
  • Jane Asher Scone Mix
  • Jane Asher Pastry Mix
  • Jane Asher Round Pastry Cutter 3 Pack
  • Jane Asher Vanilla Frosting
  • Jane Asher Chocolate Frosting
  • Jane Asher Spatula Bamboo Handle
  • Jane Asher Round Loose Bake Cake Tin
  • Jane Asher Cake Cases (100 Pack)
  • Jane Asher Sultanas 500g

Home Bargains is selling the boxes for £20.99 each, including delivery, so you won't actually be saving any money compared to buying them separately.

Each cake mix will normally set you back between 59p and £1.49 from Home Bargains - they're not available to buy anywhere else.

Meanwhile, you can expect to pay £1.39 for a tub of frosting and 99p for the bag of sultanas.

The pastry cutters cost £1.29, £1.49 for the spatula and £3.99 for the cake tin.

The cake cases aren't sold separately but you can buy a pack of 100 from a different brand for 79p.

In total, you could expect to pay £17.50 if you bought them all separately, plus the £3.49 delivery charge.

But compared to other stores, you are getting a better deal.

The cake mixes are cheaper to other supermarket brands that will typically set you back £2 per pack from Tesco or Sainsbury's, while tubs of frosting go for around £2.50.

Similarly, a cake tin will set you back around £6.99 from Robert Dyas - £3 more expensive than the Jane Asher one.

Of course, they're only worth it if you're actually going to use all of the cake mixes and you'll need to pay extra for the eggs, oil and butter that needs to be added to most of the mixtures.

"We have carefully selected some of our best selling products to create this Jane Asher Baking Box," Home Bargains wrote on its website, "ideal for those who may be struggling to get certain items, are self-isolating or want to send a care package to a loved one".
