Employment help and advice as it’s feared one in three jobs could be lost due to coronavirus

A SHOCK new study claims one in three jobs could be lost in parts of the UK due to the coronavirus crisis.

Experts from the Royal Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce say jobs in hospitality, retail and tourism are most likely to be hit — and a plan revealed by British Airways this week to make 12,000 staff redundant shows huge job cuts are already starting to bite.

My new start without going out

What if you’ve already accepted a new role? Starting a new job is always stressful, but beginning it under lockdown away from your new colleagues is even tougher.

Neda Kinduryte recently joined online used car marketplace Heycar under lockdown as a website engineer.

Neda, 23, from London, said: “I was excited to meet the team, but when I learned I’d be working remotely, I wasn’t too disappointed.

“As companies increasingly move towards remote working possibilities, I saw this situation as an opportunity to test something that might be considered a new normal in the future.”

Here are Neda’s top tips for tackling a remote start to a new job.

ASK QUESTIONS: It’s crucial to understand your new company’s culture so you quickly feel part of the team.

HR departments or line managers should talk you through this in your first week, and ask as many questions as you need.

GET YOUR FACE KNOWN: Normally in a new job, you’d meet your colleagues and quickly get to know them.

As that’s not possible right now, arrange video one-to-ones and group calls so you can piece together what everyone does.

STICK AROUND AFTER HOURS: While Friday drinks are out, socialise online.

It’s a great way to get to know your new colleagues away from work and find out about their personalities.

LITTLE THINGS MATTER: Attending lots of video meetings in my first few weeks has meant I’ve seen inside almost all my new workmates’ homes.

I’ve met pets, children and partners.
You really get to know them quickly and it makes for great conversation-starters too.

BE BUSY: Nothing makes you feel part of a company more than rolling up your sleeves and getting stuck into some work.

Always be first to put your hand up to volunteer for something new.

ASK the expert

WITH lockdown expected to ease over the coming months, firms are already planning how to social-distance staff. Digital pharmacy nowpatient.com is already operating social distancing in its huge warehouse.

Here CEO Lee Dentith explains how to get it right. He said: “All firms should have policies in place to keep team members working safely.”

  1. Ensure all employees have their own work- station or desk, which is located at least two metres or more apart from other colleagues. Mark out the distance on the floor.
  2. Keep it individual. Make sure that each employee has their own items, such as pens, a computer, coffee mug and stationery.
  3. Wipe down workstations, chairs and tables daily with antiseptic wipes. Ensure all crockery and cutlery is washed immediately after use. Bins must be emptied and cleaned daily.
  4. Place all chairs and tables in the communal areas at least two metres apart and only let a few people use the space at any one time.
  5. Place hand sanitisers in all areas and have signs up so all staff ensure they clean their hands before and after lunch.
  6. If any employee is showing signs of illness, especially signs of Covid-19, ensure you follow all government regulations.
  7. Place disinfectant wipes and sprays in all communal toilets and ask all employees to spray the facilities after use.
