CLUCKING GOOD

KFC fans are recreating their favourite menu items at home and the fried chicken chain is rating them

KFC fans are making their own fried chicken from home – and their efforts are being savagely judged by the fast food chain.

Fried chicken lovers have resorted to recreating their favourite KFC items after the restaurant chain closed all its branches because of coronavirus.

KFC is asking its top fans to send it examples of their home-made fried chicken

Their attempts have now been honestly, and sometimes brutally, rated by KFC after the chicken chain asked customers to post their best homemade dishes on Twitter.

KFC tweeted: “Reply below your best homemade KFC with #RateMyKFC and I’ll score it out of 10.

“Disclaimer: I’m more Ramsey than Berry.”

From the tasty to the downright terrible, here’s what KFC fans have come up with.

This have-a-go chef attempted to make KFC-style chicken strips, along with beans and the chicken chain’s famous gravy.

Unfortunately, KFC wasn’t overly impressed with their effort.

KFC said: “The chicken on the bone looks like you’ve played with a jacket potato like it’s a Stretch Armstrong and that gravy is a suspicious colour. Beans and strips look good thou. 6/10.”

KFC's best put-downs

SADLY we couldn't include every fakeaway KFC in our round-up, but here are some of the best responses from chicken chain.

  • “The chicken on the bone looks like you’ve played with a jacket potato like it’s a Stretch Armstrong and that gravy is a suspicious colour.”
  • “It’s a fair first try, but it looks like instead of breading the chicken you’ve tried to colour it in with a brown Sharpie that lost it’s lid in 1998.”
  • “A wet blue Rizla is a stronger skin than this. Need to up your egg wash game pal.”
  • “This is the saddest thing I’ve seen and I’ve watched the Futurama episode were the dog waits outside for Fry.”
  • “This is #RateMyKFC, not #RateMySFC or whatever you call those buckets in the freezer aisle.”
  • “I wore my new Dr Martens for the first time today to pop to the shop. That was less painful than looking at this. BBQ sauce touching the mash?! Gravy needs a few thousand extra granules, too.”
  • “We’re Kentucky FRIED Chicken, not Kentucky cook it in a lukewarm bath for 9 minutes Chicken. Mash looks nice though.”
  • “This is an absolute monstrosity. I feel ill looking at it, but by God I want it.”

This KFC fan got points for their use of jalapeno peppers on their chips, but the chicken chain said it had concerns over the colour of the chicken skin.

KFC said: “It’s a fair first try, but it looks like instead of breading the chicken you’ve tried to colour it in with a brown Sharpie that lost it’s lid in 1998. Jalapeños on the chips is inspired. 5/10.”

KFC was impressed with this attempt.

In fact, it was so impressed that the chicken chain said it almost couldn’t tell the difference between this DIY effort and the real deal.

KFC said: “I’m convinced this is our chicken. Like, seriously. 9.5/10.”

These fakeaway KFC chicken legs have the typical golden colour that you’d usually find on KFC.

It’s no surprise the chicken chain only had one word for this fan: “Exquisite. 9/10.”

The mac and cheese side saved this KFC fan from too much of a sassy put-down, despite their chicken failing to make the cut.

KFC said: “Slightly dry flake but counterbalanced by the mac and cheese side. A solid 8/10.”

KFC gave this fan credit for make their own takeaway box, calling the font used for the letters “nearly bang on”.

The fried chicken also avoided a slating and was deemed “very passable”.

KFC said: “Cor we have a contender alright. The font of the letters is nearly bang on, the chips look great and the chicken very passable. 8.5/10.”

Yes, that is pieces of fried chicken combined with beans, toast, and cut up potato waffles.

Just like us, KFC didn’t quite know what to make of this creation.

KFC said: “This is an absolute monstrosity. I feel ill looking at it, but by God I want it. 7.5/10.”

Want to make your own KFC chicken?

KFC famously uses a secret mix of 11 herbs and spices to create its Original Recipe chicken.

Sadly, the exact recipe has been a closely guarded secret for years.

In fact, staff aren’t even told the recipe – it’s locked away in a secret vault in the US.

A relative of KFC founder Colonel Sanders said he’d found the recipe for the spice mix in an old scrapbook once owned by the Colonel’s second wife.

KFC’s owner, Yum! Brands, has always denied it’s the recipe it uses – but it could be worth trying it out since they’ll never share the real thing.

Mix with two cups of white flour:

  • 2/3 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Thyme
  • 1/2 tsp Basil
  • 1/3 tsp Oregano
  • 1 tsp Celery Salt
  • 1 tsp Black Pepper
  • 1 tsp Dried Mustard
  • 4 tsp Paprika
  • 2 tsp Garlic Salt
  • 1 tsp Ground Ginger
  • 3 tsp White Pepper

Here’s what happened when The Sun went behind the scenes at one KFC restaurant in central London to make the Colonel’s famous chicken.
