Five helpful ways to get your food and drink supplies while avoiding supermarkets
IS your food shop proving to be mission impossible?
Many supermarket delivery slots are being filled too fast or have been reserved, perfectly reasonably, for elderly and vulnerable people.
So with that in mind, when you can’t get food delivered from your supermarket, here are some other ways that might be helpful . . .
BUTCHER: Check in with your local butcher and find out what meats they have in, perhaps a put-together box of cheaper cuts could help stock your family freezer?
Plus, if it is something new to you, ask how you cook it and what to serve with it. You’ll get more for your money in terms of advice and the quality will likely be better than supermarkets.
GREENGROCER: If your supermarket is running low on veg, try your local greengrocer. They have access to wholesalers and may well be able to kit you out with a box of all you need.
I always think a greengrocer offers you better value. If you think a box would be too much, you can freeze or batch cook the veg.
FARM SHOPS: Do you have a farm or farm shop near to you? They may be worth calling, plus many are offering delivery.
According to Farmers Weekly website, many farm shops are responding to the increase in demand for food by allowing customers to order fresh produce to be delivered to their doors. So you’ll be supporting local businesses and keeping stocked at the same time.
EVENT COMPANIES: Lots of events have been cancelled, but the caterers will have already ordered the alcohol and non-perishable items.
This means that many will be selling off items and delivering them for a great price because they don’t know what’s going to happen to their business. Search Facebook Marketplace for events and check out local page adverts.
APPS: Facebook Marketplace is full of people sharing extras they have indoors, plus many are offering to drop off items to those in need.
Another great app is Neighbors, which puts you in touch with people from your surrounding streets.
