FACE UP TO HOME TRUTHS

FOR people who are used to an office, factory or another social workplace, working at home can be tough. Here are the top tips from on how to cope as a remote worker.

❶ GET THE EQUIPMENT: Need multiple screens or specialist software? Get it and make your home working experience as close as possible to what you’re used to. Most organisations that allow remote working will help you get the equipment you need.

❷ BOOST YOUR WIFI: Make sure your router is high up on a shelf or the top of a cabinet and is unobstructed by furniture to reach all parts of your room. Don’t place  it near other household electronics such as microwaves, cordless phones or baby monitors, which can interfere with the signal.

❸ KEEP  REGULAR HOURS: Set yourself a clear schedule for when to start and finish work, with regular breaks. Working remotely often leads to overworking, often due to guilt over stepping away from the computer for a break.

❹ COMMUNICATE: Message, regularly, with those who need to know about your schedule and availability. When you finish a task, say so. Keeping connected means you’ll work more efficiently and stay in contact with workmates.

EXERCISE: When you’re home-working, it’s easy to get stuck to your working space. Take a few minutes every couple of hours to stand, stretch and walk around. Sitting at your desk for too long at a time can have lasting effects on your health.
