Get help with home-schooling the kids with these great and FREE learning tools
TEACHER training starts today ...for all those parents about to home-school their kids.
And from the messages I’ve been receiving, a lot of mums and dads are worried.
So I spoke to a bunch of teaching professionals about the best places to pick up some FREE help with learning.
FOR ACE ACTIVITIES: Find hundreds of fun learning-based games and activities for those aged up to 11 at busythings.co.uk. Lots are interactive and up to five children can play some of them at once. You can get a free seven-day trial, and check out the blog, as you can download free activity packs — the science one includes drawing activities and animal diagrams to label.
FOR BITESIZE LESSONS: A great resource for learning of all ages is bbc.co.uk/bitesize with individual subject lists and daily changing content. Meanwhile, a brand new YouTube learning channel has started at learnathome.withyoutube.com. Find lists of videos from educational content creators, including everything from art lessons to science fun and more. It’s really helpful.
FOR GOOD GAMES: From quizzes to demos, with lessons in everything from making a movie to creative coding, brainpop.com is brilliant. It has now extended free access to all families for at least 30 days (and pledges for it to be free for as long as the coronavirus situation continues). If teens are interested in learning how to code and build websites, send them to pro.codecademy.com. There is a free version, but its paid-for advanced version is being offered free for 10,000 secondary school and college students. Sign up, quick.
FOR MOVERS ’N’ SHAKERS: If you want to get younger kids learning and moving (so they are tired enough to go to bed on time), gonoodle.com is full of songs and videos. Children can dance along and act out the movements. But beware — the catchy songs will be in their (and your) head all day. Sorry.
