It added: “If you have bought any of these products please return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund.”

Items affected include 280g, 360g and 520g jars of Original Sweet Pickle.

Also tainted are 2.55kg containers and 310g jars of Original Pickle, 2.55kg, 360g and 520g of Small Chunk, 355g jars of Squeezy Smooth Pickle and 370g bottles of Smooth Pickle.

They have best-before dates covering April and May 2021, and January, February and March 2022.

Maker Mizkan Euro Ltd recalled a batch in January after hundreds of complaints about a “horrible chemical taste”.

Expert Prof Chris Elliott said then: “It seems something has gone wrong with the manufacturing process — like a cleaning agent hasn’t been washed out properly.”

It is not known if the latest recall is related to those fears.

Branston sells 17million jars a year of pickle, made from diced veg in a sauce made from vinegar, tomato, apple and spices.

It was created by Caroline Graham and her two daughters in their kitchen at Branston Lodge, Staffordshire, in 1922.

Celeb fans include Keith Richards, Jonathan Ross and Noel and Liam Gallagher.

Bridget Jones, played by Renée Zellweger in the films, eats it by the spoonful out of the jar.
