Savvy shopper makes her own KFC popcorn chicken pizza from Lidl and B&M and it costs £14 less than the real thing
A SAVVY shopper has made her own version of KFC's new popcorn chicken pizza and she says it cost her £14 less than the real thing.
Support worker Samantha Eborn from Scunthorpe in Lincolnshire says she "couldn't justify" spending £18 on the official Pizza Hut version launched earlier this month.
So she instead decided to "have a bash" at making her own, and she says she is "thrilled" by the result.
The meal also went down a treat with Samantha's two-year-old son Alexander and partner Walker who loved the "fakeaway".
All in, the 29-year-old reckons she paid around £4 for the ingredients, which all came from Lidl barring the gravy, which was from B&M.
Samantha made her own pizza dough using water, oil, sugar, yeast, strong bread flour, and salt, before slathering on one portion of B&M's Mayflower Southern Fried gravy instead of tomato paste.
Next she added one bag of cooked, breaded Lidl chicken nuggets chopped into quarters, plus Lidl mild cheddar cheese on top.
The mum-of-one also added Lidl cheese strings to the edges of the pizza dough to make a gooey stuffed crust.
This is pretty much the same as KFC and Pizza Hut's mash-up except their version uses mozzarella and has sweetcorn on top too, which Samantha says she doesn't like so left off.
She posted on the alongside a picture of her creation: "My attempt at the new KFC pizza recently brought out at Pizza Hut I believe.
How to make your own KFC pizza
HERE'S Samantha's KFC pizza recipe:
Ingredients
- 400g strong white bread flour - costs 55p for a 1.5kg bag in Lidl
- 225ml warm water - from your tap
- 1 sachet dried yeast - costs 44p for 7g in Lidl
- 1 tsp sugar - costs 65p for a 1kg bag in Lidl
- 1 tsp salt - costs 18p in Lidl for 500g
- 2 tbsp oil - costs £2.59 for 1L in Lidl
- 1 bag of value chicken nuggets - costs £1.19 for a bag of 22 (450g) in Lidl
- As much value mild cheddar as you like - mild grated cheddar costs £2.49 for a pre-grated 500g bag at Lidl
- Mayflower Southern Style Gravy - £1 for a 255g mix
Recipe
- Mix the water, oil, sugar and yeast in a large bowl and leave for about 10 minutes. Add flour and salt, bring to a dough and knead for five to ten minutes until smooth. Leave to rest for 1 hour.
- Make one portion of gravy as per the intructions on the box and leave to cool.
- Cook one bag of breaded chicken nuggets and chop into quarters.
- Once the dough has proved, roll it out and put it in a baking tin. You can make a stuffed crust using cheese strings around the edge with the dough folded over the top.
- Bake in a preheated oven at gas mark 8 for 15 minutes without toppings to make sure it bakes evenly.
- Then add cooled gravy, half the cheese, the nuggets, and top with the rest of the cheese. Put it back in the oven until the cheese is golden, slice and enjoy.
"At a whopping £18 in the shop, which honestly no matter what I couldn't justify spending on a pizza, I thought I'd have a bash myself.
"Came to about £4 for a 12-inch pizza so I'm thrilled! And no nasty sweetcorn either."
Prices vary for the Pizza Hut version by store, with Samantha saying her local charges £18, but they can cost around the £20.49 mark elsewhere.
They're also only available to buy in a large 13-inch size, which is made up of ten slices.
Other shoppers can't wait to try Samantha's version at home too. One commented: "That looks ace, recipe please". While another said: "How do you make this please?"
