IF you like a lot of jam in your doughnut, you’re best off shopping at Sainsbury’s.
A Sun Money investigation has found Sainsbury’s doughnuts contained the most jam, beating other supermarkets and baker Greggs hands down.
Doughnuts from the supermarket contained around 8g of jam – 22 per cent more than the average doughnut – and were the second cheapest products we tested, at just 15p per doughnut.
Morrisons doughnuts came out bottom in our tests, containing an average of only 5g of jam.
But they were also the cheapest, costing just 10p per doughnut.
Baker’s Greggs was in the bottom half of the table for its jam-to-dough ratio, with the average doughnut containing 8.6 per cent of jam – compared to 10.5 per cent at Sainsbury’s.
But its doughnuts were the most expensive, at £1.65 for a four pack or 41p each.
For the investigation, we bought packets of doughnuts from Greggs and each of the four major supermarkets - Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons - as well as budget supermarket Lidl.
Rival store Aldi does not sell fresh doughnuts.
We weighed the doughnuts, then cut them in half, scooped out the jam and weighed this separately to reveal the jam-to-dough ratio of each doughnut.
Overall, we found two brands - Sainsbury’s and Lidl - contained more than 10 per cent jam in each doughnut.
Joanne Brind, product developer for Sainsbury’s, whose doughnuts came out on top in our investigation, said: "We ‘doughnut’ compromise when it comes to delivering to our customers a jam-packed option that is full of flavour.
"We pride ourselves on offering customers a breadth of brilliant bakery goods, available at great value."
At the bottom of the table, Morrisons doughnuts contained just 6.1 per cent jam.
The results echo complaints from disappointed shoppers who have been protesting online about the contents of Morrison’s doughnuts in recent months.
Twitter user Chris posted a picture of a doughnut containing no jam, adding: "Bought a pack of @Morrisons jam doughnuts but every doughnut had a key ingredient missing! Devastating!"
While another user uploaded a picture of a Morrisons doughnut containing just a tiny bit of jam and tweeted: "@Morrisons would you call this a "jam" doughnut???"
But Morrisons said the low level of jam we found in their doughnuts was likely to be a one-off.
A spokesman said: "Our bakers in each store make doughnuts from scratch each day and that's what makes them taste good. It's a process that requires a lot of skill.
"In your case it looks like there has been a human error and the pack you purchased had about half the jam we'd expect to have in our doughnuts."
Greggs, whose doughnuts were the worst value-for-money in our test, declined to comment.
