A 5ft Nordmann can be picked up from Homebase for £20.

Morrisons sells a less compact but slightly taller version for £15. Meanwhile Waitrose is selling trees between 7ft and 8ft for £55.

Consumer group Which? said: “There’s nothing like bagging a bargain especially during one of the most expensive times of the year. There is a host of stores selling the most popular type of tree in the UK — a Nordmann fir — for less than £30, with the cheapest costing just £15.”

The Nordmann is the favourite due to its non-drop needles.

For the eco-minded, Which? asked where the trees were grown. Seven of the nine retailers said theirs all come from the UK.

Asda and Morrisons said not all their Christmas trees were grown here.

Which? said environmentally friendly families should avoid an artificial tree unless they were willing to use it for ten years.
