Cheapest Christmas turkeys 2019 – Aldi crowned winner with £9 bird
ALDI has been crowned the cheapest Christmas turkey in The Sun's annual price comparison.
The supermarket won the frozen bird category - but it was closely followed by Morrisons and Tesco who both charge just 1p more.
The UK's biggest grocer - Tesco - won the cheapest fresh category with its £10 bird.
While topped the premium list, with its luxury £27 The Best range turkey.
The Sun has run the digits to find the cheapest frozen, fresh and luxury turkeys for Christmas 2019.
We looked at turkeys from eight different retailers so you know what you’re cheapest options are if you’re loyal to one supermarket.
It’s always best to shop around though as prices do change and shops can knock money off in the run-up to the big day.
You might also find cheaper turkeys from an independent or local butcher where they are more likely to be locally sourced and have lived with higher standards of animal welfare.
To find the cheapest, we did our best to compare birds like-for-like where possible and took the cost per kg into account.
We tried to compare birds which served roughly the same amount of people and focused on whole turkeys as opposed to crowns.
The prices in each table are also based on the cheapest weight available.
The only supermarket who did not provide us with turkey prices, and who doesn’t have any turkeys listed on their website yet, is Lidl.
Where can you buy the cheapest bird?
Cheapest frozen turkey - £8.99 from Aldi (£2.64 per kg)
Just like our 2018 price comparison, Aldi has worked out cheapest in our frozen turkey price comparison - and the price has remained the same.
The supermarket's small British turkey is just £2.64 per kilogram and serves seven people, with a pack price of £8.99.
But shortly behind is both Tesco and Morrisons, whose frozen birds were only 1p cheaper at £9 in total.
Although if you're counting per kilogram, Morrisons works out best at £2.31 - while Tesco is £2.82 per kilogram.
The Aldi turkey is also a massive £13.76 cheaper than the cheapest deal from Waitrose, which will set you back £22.75.
You could buy another whole bird for that price difference.
While most fresh turkeys won't go on sale until a few days before Christmas, frozen birds are on sale now.
M&S didn't provide us with their cheapest frozen turkey.
Cheapest fresh turkey - £11.85 from Aldi (£3.95 per kg)
Morrisons was cheapest in 2018, but this time round the winner is Tesco.
The UK's biggest supermarket is top for the least pricey fresh whole turkey, which costs £4 per kilogram and serves between four to ten people.
For its smallest size, 2.5kg, the Tesco bird costs £10.
In terms of total cost, the next cheapest was Sainsbury's which is selling a 2kg turkey that serves up to six people for £11.
But broken down by weight, it was another scoop for Aldi whose fresh turkey costs £3.95 per kilogram.
Because the smallest fresh turkey the budget retailer sells is 3kg, the minimum price you'll pay is £11.86.
It might come as no surprise that the supermarket with the priciest fresh bird on sale is M&S.
At £35 for a 5.4kg bird, a shopper going for this luxury supermarket option will pay £25 more than Tesco.
Asda lists the "typical size" of their fresh turkey as 3.5kg and the retailer couldn't tell us the smallest size available when we asked.
Iceland isn't included in this category because it isn't selling a fresh bird this year, while Morrisons didn't want to share its fresh turkey prices with us.
If you're already dreaming of your Christmas dinner, you'll have a little while to wait as most of these birds won't be available to buy in store until December 19 at the earliest.
Some of them, however, are ready to pre-order now.
Cheapest luxury turkey - £27 from Morrisons (£6.75 per kg)
Each supermarket has its own luxury brand and in terms of turkeys, Morrisons' The Best range came out top.
Its free range whole bronze turkey is cheapest in terms of total price, working out at £27 for a 4kg bird and serving seven to eight people.
But for price per kilogram, this works out at £6.75 which isn't actually the cheapest option.
The best turkey price in terms of per kilogram was Tesco's Finest British free range whole turkey, coming in at £5.97.
As the starting weight for this turkey is 4.75kg - which is slightly bigger than the Morrisons option - the cheapest price you'll pay is £28.36.
Waitrose proved to be the most expensive with its No.1 free range dry aged bronzed feathered turkey costing £56 in total - or £14 per kilogram.
Iceland only had a turkey crown in its Luxury range and our list is focused on whole birds.
What's the difference between a turkey crown and whole bird?
A turkey crown is the whole bird that's had the dark meat removed - the legs and the wings - so you're left with the white meat and no giblets.
They're typically a few pounds cheaper than a whole bird and are quicker to cook too.
The cheapest Asda turkey crown costs £5.50 per kilogram, while it's £6.25 per kilogram from Tesco and £6.89 per kilogram from Aldi.
Morrisons best price for a turkey crown is £7 per kilogram, compared to £7.50 per kilogram at Sainsbury's, which is also the same price as Iceland.
At Waitrose, the cheapest turkey crown price per kilogram you'll get is £10.
What turkey alternatives are there?
Not everyone celebrates with a turkey on Christmas Day and thankfully there are plenty of other options out there.
For lovers of cheese, Aldi is selling a gooey camembert nut roast for £2.99, while Sainsbury's sell a similar cheese nut roast for £2.
Meanwhile if you want to go big on your veggies, Tesco is doing a butternut squash, mushroom, and chestnut wreath for £4.50.
And Iceland is selling brie and cranberry pastry crowns for £2.
