From eye masks to odour eaters – five uses for teabags other than to make a cuppa — plus win £50,000 in our raffle
WE’RE all up for the cuppa – tea remains the country’s most loved hot beverage.
But with three quarters of us making at least one brew a day, we bin millions of teabags, says The Grocer magazine. Check out these great teabag economies . . .
CLEANING: Wood need a polish? Steep some used bags in warm water and use it to buff surfaces. You’ll save 60p on Tesco’s Wooden Furniture Polish.
SAVE: 60p on wood polish
GARDENING: Old teabags that don’t contain plastic can be composted. To add nutrients to your garden, soak used bags in your watering can and sprinkle the water over soil. The water can also be used as fertiliser for potted plants. You would spend more than £3 on fertiliser at B&Q.
SAVE: £3.64 on fertiliser
BEAUTY: Brew two bags, let them cool until warm and place over your eyes to reduce dark circles and puffiness. Much cheaper than Garnier’s eye sheet mask, £2.99 at Boots. A wet bag can also help alleviate razor burn. If you’ve got fragrant teabags, pop one in a running bath for an aromatic infusion.
SAVE: £2.99 on an eye mask
BANISHING SMELLS: Fill up smelly shoes with tea bags and leave overnight — they are great for soaking up moisture. You can also hang fragrant bags in your car as an air freshener or pop a couple in a bowl at the back of your fridge to get rid of food odours. Little Trees air freshener is at least £1.50 at Halfords.
SAVE: £1.50 on air freshener
COOKING: Add spiced teas to soup, stews, broths or rice for flavour. Mix Earl Grey with gin, or mint tea with rum, to make DIY cocktails — you’ll save around £7 on a bar-bought drink. Delicious.
SAVE: Around £7 on a cocktail
