Asda customers will able to use refillable containers to buy pasta, rice and cereal in new plastic-cutting initiative
ASDA customers will be invited to bring in their own refillable containers when shopping from next year.
The chain thinks it will help end single-use plastics clogging up oceans.
Instead of buying pre-packaged groceries, shoppers can use plastic or glass containers to fill from dispensers.
It is not clear what products will be included but Waitrose already offers refills of 30 dry goods such as pasta, rice and cereal plus wines and beers.
Cleaning products might be included in the three-month trial but it is unlikely that messy foods such as ketchup and yoghurt will be.
Asda is playing catch-up with rivals Waitrose, Tesco and Sainsbury’s all of which have plastic-cutting initiatives.
The supermarket chain is urging suppliers to come up with ideas to trim use.
It pledged to test any clever innovations for three months and roll them out if they are a hit with customers.
It has also set new targets for reducing plastic packaging.
Asda boss Roger Burnley reckons food companies focus too much on customer convenience rather than what is good for the environment.
He said: “Our focus is on removing unnecessary plastic.”
