Why binge-watching box sets with your partner is making you fatter than if you watched alone
A new study has revealed the unhealthy side affect of a night in with your other half
WE all love curling up on the sofa for a marathon box set session.
But if you don’t want to pile on the pounds, you’d better ditch the other half for the evening.
That’s because binge-watching with your partner leads to binge eating – and it’s making TV addicts fatter.
Couples who watch TV together are TWICE as likely to tuck into snacks, a new study has found.
In fact one series of Game of Thrones, watched together, could see you put on 4lbs between you.
Watching box sets is worse than watching a movie because the breaks between episodes sends us scuttling to the kitchen for biscuits, crisps and chocolate.
Forzadiet.com surveyed 1000 people for the study.
More than half (58 per cent) said they would snack on treats such as crisps, biscuits and popcorn when enjoying a series together.
TV addicts tend to get through 20% more calories when they eat while distracted because they are not keeping tabs on how much they are consuming.
Eating at night also leads to weight gain as the body has less time to digest food before sleep.
Three-quarters (74 per cent) said they would put on weight over the course of a long-running drama – and the gain could be 2lb per series.
The most popular box sets for couples were House of Cards, Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones.
Forzadiet.com’s managing director Lee Smith said: “We all love watching box sets together but they can wreak havoc with diets.
“If your partner brings in some snacks while you are watching together it is almost impossible not to join in - consuming calories that you would not have if you were watching on your own. Weight gain for the couple is determined by the partner with the least willpower.”
