Worryingly, many claim that the new biscuits are “terrible” for dunking – and that they go soggy and break within seconds.

Some custard cream customers have even vented their anger on social media and demanded an explanation.

One customer tweeted: “I am not sure what you have done to your custard creams but they are terrible to dunk in tea now.

“They used to be perfect.”

Another wrote: “Why did you change your own custard creams?

“They were incredible and new ones just aren’t.”

One firm fan even said he’d been a fan of the own brand biccies for decades and until recently and had considered them the “perfect biscuit”.

The continued: “They had a special taste and when dunked they didn’t disintegrate and drop into my tea in a nano second.

“But the Tesco biscuit now has a different shape and texture and tastes unpleasantly sweet.

“Even worse, on first dunk it falls into my tea.”

But, there were those who claimed to be satisfied with the apparent change.

One pleased purchaser Tesco: “My son Tom wants to say thanks for making your custard creams even tastier.”

The feedback comes after Tesco reduced the salt and sugar content of its custard creams.

The supermarket says that it tested the new version with a panel of 250 Tesco custard cream fans - who said they preferred the new texture.

A Tesco spokesman told: “They [the test panel] rated our new custard creams as being even tastier than the old recipe, and as they contain less salt and sugar they are a little bit healthier too.”
