Long-term gum disease sufferers were found to be at highest risk of Alzheimer’s.

A study of 28,000 people in Taiwan found those who had had it for more than ten years were 70 per cent more likely to be hit by the condition.

Previous studies have shown that dementia patients with gum disease tend to deteriorate more quickly, but it had not been known which condition came first.

The new study suggests that gum disease itself may be behind the brain condition.
