Rahul, his dad Minesh and mum Komal spoke to Christine Bleakley on Lorraine today about the pressures of Child Genius

He appeared on ITV’s Lorraine today to chat to guest presenter Christine Bleakley about the show and what he hoped to do with his incredible talent.

Rahul said that he wished to put his maths talents to good use and do something to help others using his intelligence.

He said: “I want to do something with maths because I really love maths. Maybe be financial adviser or something like that because I like to help others as well.

“I want to use my talents wisely, it’s not good to be selfish so you should help others.”

Rahul has become one of the favourites to win Child Genius on Channel 4, and quite a stir when he got every question correct in the first week.

He was put forward for the competition by professional snooker player dad Minesh and mum Komal who denied putting pressure on their talented child.

Rahul said the trick to getting questions right on Child Genius is to block everything else out

Minesh, who also works as an IT manager told Christine: “It is tough, you have to remember they’re 9, 10, 11, 12 years old so they’re still kids, but they’ve qualified for the television programme and I think they’re capable kids.”

Rahul said that on the show he has a particular tactic for remaining calm under pressure.

He said: “The key is to block out everything else and remain calm and focus on your goal, which mine was to answer as many questions as I could correctly.

“That helped me stay calm and do quite well in the early stages.”

Rahul then put his skills in action and tested Christine and Dr Hilary Jones’ maths and spelling skills live on air, with each host getting one question correct.

Despite the tense competition on the show, mum Komal insisted that all the parents of the kids get on really well.

She said: “We’ve all been really good friends, we’ve all had such a laugh on the show. You know, stayed in the hotel for four days and got to know them really well. We see a different side of it on TV as well but everybody was such a laugh,’ she explained.

“The kids had a great time, the parents had a great time and behind-the-scenes we were all just being friends, like-minded families who want the best for their kids.”

Rahul has become a favourite to win on the show due to his impressive performance

Child Genius involves numerous child prodigies competing in a series of tasks, eliminated one by one, before the last lucky brainbox lands the top prize.

The show has caused some controversy with viewers who’ve despaired at the crop of “Britain’s pushiest parents” featured on it, and some have said the programme is exploitative of the children featured.

It emerged this week that Channel 4 bosses could tighten rules on Child Genius quiz after row over cheating parents suspends filming.

An insider told The Sun: “Programme bosses are looking into whether they can make it tougher next year in terms of making sure there is no parental influence during the rounds.”

Child Genius continues tonight at 8pm on Channel 4.
