BBC News presenter Simon McCoy seems unimpressed with story about surfing dogs… and it’s the funniest thing you’ll see today
Newsreader Simon McCoy couldn't hide his lack of interest as he delivered a deadpan report about the surfing pooches
THIS is the brilliant clip showing a BBC newsreader's unimpressed take on a story he very clearly couldn't care less about.
Newsreader Simon McCoy couldn't hide his lack of interest as he delivered a deadpan report about the World Dog Surfing Championships.
The hard-hitting anchor, who spent much of the 2003 Iraq invasion reporting from the front lines, was hosting the BBC's live news coverage on Monday afternoon when he delivered the report about surfing dogs.
Held in San Francisco, the World Dog Surfing Championships are a chance for pet owners to show off their pooches' wave-riding abilities, with entrants judged for their costumes and skills on a board.
But the BBC newsreader clearly couldn't get into the spirit of the event, delivering a report dripping in sarcasm.
With a noticeably bored tone, he said: "Now, you’re watching BBC News, just bear in mind it is August.
"This does not look like a walk in the park, dog owners and their pets in California have hit the waves in the second annual World Dog Surfing Championships.
"Here are the pictures.”
The screen then cuts to footage of adorable pooches giving it their all on a San Francisco beach, but even that isn't enough to melt Simon's heart.
After a weary sigh, he continues: "The competitors’ challenge is to stay afloat on the board.
"This is in Pacifica near San Francisco but there are also prizes for the best dressed and tandem surfing dogs; the winner of course being crowned top dog.”
As the camera cuts back to the studio, the straight-faced presenter says flatly: “That’s a shame. We’ve run out of pictures".
The sarcastic clip emerged on Twitter after fellow BBC journalist Chris Gray posted the segment with the caption: "@BBCSimonMcCoy providing all the enthusiasm this story about surfing dogs deserves".
READ ALL ABOUT IT! Hilarious TV news fails show stats that don’t add up and some VERY rude spelling mistakes
One viewer was so impressed with the newsreader's deadpan delivery that they joked he should do commentary for next year's Eurovision Song Contest.
Ian McHugh asked: "Is he free for #Eurovision2018?", prompting Simon to joke: "Yes he is!!"
This isn't the first time a BBC personality has accidentally become the story.
Earlier this year, a BBC World News expert became an international star after his interview on South Korea was interrupted by his children.
The clip was praised and ridiculed all over social media, with the entire Kelly family becoming online icons as a result.
