There's nothing worse than a weak cup of coffee on a sleepy working day, so these are the guidelines you should be sticking to.

When making a pot of coffee, the magic number is one or two tablespoons of ground coffee to every six ounces of water (that's three quarters of a glass to you and me).

And your water should be slightly cooled after boiling, to between 85C and 96C for optimum brewing.

You should then leave the coffee to drip for five minutes in your filter jug.
