ON A SAUSAGE ROLL

Greggs is opening drive-thru kiosks across the UK… so you’ll soon be able to grab a steak bake from the comfort of your car

Greggs CEO Roger Whiteside said customers demand convenience and he’s not sure why they didn’t roll out the initiative “years ago”

GREGGS plans to open more drive-thru kiosks across the UK.

After a successful pilot in Manchester in June – which saw hungry punters grab steak bakes and iced buns without leaving their cars - the rest of Britain will soon enjoy the efficient service.

Greggs CEO Roger Whiteside said customers demand convenience and he’s not sure why they didn’t roll out the initiative “years ago”.

Speaking to the , he said: “Customers are very taken by the idea of not having to leave their cars.

“We wondered if they would be welcoming to do this, and it’s been very positive – I don’t understand why we haven’t done this years ago.

“We are actively looking for more sites but we will be competing against others looking for more sites.

“It’s something that’s become more and more prevalent – you’ve even got coffee shops now involved in drive-thrus.

"The main factor in how customers decide where to shop is convenience, and this is the most convenient – they don’t even have to leave their cars.

"And they are getting just the same as they would in the store – breakfasts, coffees and so on – so it seems to be the most natural thing to do."

Greggs has 1,806 traditional outlets.

Its first drive-thru opened at a Salford service station, following a similar format to the likes of Costa Coffee, KFC, and McDonald's.

Roger said there is an “edited selection of the menu” at the lane but the whole range is available.

He said customers “know what they want” so often just order from memory.

The plan is to operate the drive-thrus over peak times – from morning through to the evening rush hour.

The precise locations of the new Greggs kiosks have not yet been revealed, but it is likely they will be in motorway services and shopping centres.
