Despite claims it is bad for the joints, a scientific study says a steady, regular jog is good for the knees and hips – and reduces the risk of osteoarthritis.

Today I look at ways to make your run more comfortable and have tested cleansing balms to freshen up your face afterwards.

Trainers

I like New Balance but generally for kicking about it in, not running.

I tried the Vazee Agility v2 (£75) and they were great – the lightest trainers I’ve worn and they look great.

They have technology to stop the foot from rolling over, superior traction, extra cushioning and perforations to help feet breathe. See .

Socks

Stance is a cool Californian brand that has brought out a great range available in the UK.

The socks (from £11) are brilliant, with cushioning at the point where your feet naturally make contact with the ground, and arch support.

They are breathable, so your feet don’t get stinky, come in great colours and are really comfortable. See .

Compression tights

Some say they make no difference to your run.

But I’ve tried the new 2XU MCS Run Compression Tights and they really do.

I could run further after wearing them a couple of times because my legs felt lighter and less tired. Lovely design, with a thick waistband, but not cheap at £99. See .

Elemis Pro Collagen Cleansing Balm (£40 for 105g ): Suitable for all skin types, claims to dissolve make-up and daily grime as well as intensely cleanse and nourish.

The heavenly aromatherapy oil scent was instantly relaxing.

Thin texture felt odd to rub over my face but it did remove all make-up and left skin feeling clean.

Mid-range

Pestle & Mortar Erase Balm Cleanser (£34 for 100ml, ): Formulated with grapeseed oil for lightweight, non-greasy cleansing.

All my make-up came off, including waterproof mascara, and my skin felt remarkably clean and soft afterwards.

I can’t fault it at all and it is suitable for all skin types.

Definitely my favourite of the three.

Budget

Pixi Nourishing Cleansing Balm (£18 for 90ml ): With a light, fresh scent and smooth texture, this did remove all my make-up but left my skin feeling a little tight afterwards. Cleanses well and is a good price compared with the other products but didn’t feel quite as special. Suitable for all skin types.
