This is the best thing to eat before your morning workout

In association with Voltarol

IF you think back to PE classes in school, we were always told to leave time between eating and exercising – particularly swimming.

It was a rule that almost became a superstition and we followed along for fear of not throwing up in front of our class mates.

Although fasted workouts are very much a "thing" nowadays, it's totally acceptable to eat breakfast before you exercise.

If you're anything like me, sometimes you wake up feeling completely ravenous and just the thought of a workout can make you feel dizzy.

You need an energy boost, but what's the right thing to eat?

Our Instagram feeds may be filled with perfectly plated avocado on toast, colourful smoothie bowls and and healthy quinoa options, but when you're on the go you want a simple fix.

So we've rounded up some of the best solutions that are quick, easy and nutritious. Here are some of our favourites.

Grainy bread with almond butter and a banana

The combo of protein and carbs will give you an instant energy boost and keep you fuller for longer. Almond butter is high in Vitamin E which can help lower cholesterol and in small doses can improve heart health because it is high in magnesium, which promotes the flow of blood.

Granola and fat-free yogurt

The sugar in the granola will wake you up and get you going. The oats are high in fibre and iron, while the nuts and seeds are high in unsaturated fats, which are really good for heart health. Just make sure the one you choose isn't too full of sugar or fat.

Avocado on toast

It's the Instagrammer's favourite for a reason. Avocados contain nearly 20 different vitamins and minerals, so they're a great, nutrient-rich start to the day.

An English muffin topped with a poached egg

It's that carbohydrate-protein combo again. Eggs are arguably the cheapest source of high-quality protein. Just one egg contains more than half of your recommended daily allowance of Vitamin B2, which helps the body convert food into fuel, giving you lots and lots of energy. It's just what you need before a morning work out.

Replace your heavy porridge or fatty fry up with one of these simple and tasty ideas and you'll be ready to run in no time.
