Women with fertility problems THREE times more likely to get pregnant from a doctor inserting sperm than having sex

WOMEN with fertility problems are three times more likely to fall pregnant if a doctor places sperm inside the uterus than through sex, a study suggests.

Pregnancy rates in couples given three cycles of the intrauterine insemination (IUI) procedure were compared with those who had intercourse.

There were 31 live births among 101 couples on IUI, but just nine among the other 100 pairs, experts in New Zealand found.

The National Institute of Health and Care Excellence suggests “regular” intercourse for two years before receiving IVF on the NHS.

It tells couples with un­explained fertility problems IUI is unlikely to be offered as it “has not been found to increase chances of pregnancy”.

Prof Cindy Farquhar said: “This is something Nice needs to look at again.”
