Broccoli crowned UK’s favourite vegetable after being branded a ‘superfood’… while trendy Kale comes bottom of poll

Broccoli, once considered healthy but horrible, beat sweetcorn and tomato to the top spot

BROCCOLI has shaken off its bad image to be voted No1 in a poll of Britain’s favourite veg.

It was once regarded as healthy but horrible — but in recent years has been reinvented as a superfood.

It got 12 per cent of the vote in a survey of 2,000 Brits by Diabetes UK.

It beat sweetcorn and tomato into joint second place. They both got ten per cent of the vote.

Kale came bottom, attracting just 18 votes, less than one per cent of the total.

Broccoli, part of the cabbage family, comes from the Mediterranean and was introduced in England in the 18th century.

It contains vitamins A, C and K, calcium, fibre and compounds indole-3-carbinol and sulforaphane, said to combat cancer.
