The news came as the Sinnerman was asked a question about popular video game Mario Kart.

Host Bradley Walsh asked: "In what well-known racing video game are bananas and turtles thrown?"

Uncharacteristically, Paul stumbled as he searched for the answer, incorrectly guessing: "Grand Theft Auto."

Following the blunder, the quizzer joked about why he got the question wrong.

He said: "My ex used to play Mario Kart all the time... he also said I never paid attention to him."

After getting a rare glimpse into the Chasers private life, many took to Twitter to praise him for being so open about his sexuality.

One commenter remarked: "Just watched @paulsinha talk about his ex boyfriend on the @ITV quiz show #TheChase and it's definitely welcome! Thank you for being open."

Another agreed: "Well... I didn't know the Sinnerman was gay #TheChase."

Despite the revelation, Paul's co-star Anne Hegerty was a lot less surprised by the news.

She teased: "Twitter has just discovered that @paulsinha is gay. Well done, Twitter."

Another viewer agreed with The Governess, remarking: "Yes, he's gay. Old news."

It's not the first time the show has got fans in a flap, with viewers recently swooning over the 'fittest ever' contestant.

Quiz fanatics were also frustrated by another contestant who had an unusual idea of where a mantelpiece should go.
