THE number of pensioners needing care could rocket by a quarter to 2.8million over the next decade, a study found.

Researchers warn spending on health and social care will have to rise “considerably” to meet the demands of 560,000 extra people.

They suggest the cash should be used to train more staff and build more care homes.

More must also be done to tackle poor diets, smoking, high alcohol consumption, diabetes and high blood pressure.

All increase the risks of chronic diseases.

The University of Liverpool and University College London academics analysed trends in illness and life expectancy.

They also considered the disability these illnesses may cause, such as difficulty getting out of bed, bathing and dressing.

They found the expanding care needs will largely be due to more people living into old age.

The number of people aged over 65 is expected to increase by a fifth from 10.4million in 2015 to 12.4million in 2025.

The number hitting 85 and beyond will rocket by 39 per cent to 2million, The Lancet Public Health journal reports.

Dementia will account for the biggest increase in disability, with rates among those aged 65 and over rising 49 per cent.

Dr Maria Guzman-Castillo, of the University of Liverpool, said: “The rising burden shows the urgent need for policy development that includes effective prevention interventions.”
