What are fidget spinners?

Fidget spinners were designed as stress-relieving tools, which have been used to help kids deal with ADHD and anxiety.

The propeller-shaped gadgets, which come in a variety of colours, have ball bearings which allow them to spin.

You simply hold it in between your fingers, flick it and watch it spin. Some versions even light up, and they are completely silent.

Kids can compete against each other to come up with the best tricks, or to keep their gadget spinning the longest.

Promoted to beat boredom and increase concentration, some Amazon reviewers even claim the toys have helped them stop biting their nails.

There is a skill to mastering the gadgets, which are small enough to fit in your pocket and cost as little as £1.

Where can you buy fidget spinners?

The Entertainer have just launched a variety of cube spinners, which are available for £10 each.

You can also buy the toys from Amazon, eBay, , The Works or the .

Supermarkets like also stock the must-have toys with prices starting from £2.99.

The world’s most advanced fidget spinner can keep rotating for up to 12 minutes – but costs £121.

And one of the most expensive fidget spinners are on sale for an eye-watering £13,000 each.

Russian luxury jewellery firm Caviar have launched a selection of the toys – and they all have pretty hefty price tags - with the full gold being the priciest.

Why have some schools banned fidget spinners?

It's normally only a matter of time before a must-have toy is banned, and the fidget spinner is no exception.

All Hallows RC High School in Salford, Greater Manchester, was among the first to ban the toy.

A teacher texted parents explaining that: "They are a distraction to learning and can be dangerous."

However, some parents of children with special needs complained about the blanket ban.

Are fidget spinners dangerous?

Trading standards officers have removed almost 300 of the toys from shops and market stalls after finding they don’t have any safety information.

Council cabinet member for community services, Martin Veale, told the : “Our Trading Standards officers have been looking at some of the spinners on sale and found them to have very small dangerous parts, so for public safety it’s only right that they be withdrawn from sale."

There are fears that fidget spinners purchased from unreputable sources could cause choking or internal bleeding.

And one mum warned of the dangers of the popular playground toy after her son “nearly lost an eye” while performing tricks.

Australian Molly has claimed her 11-year-old son Isaac suffered a painful injury after throwing one of the toys up in the air.

Recent concerns were also raised because of "exploding" Bluetooth fidget spinners that 'burst into flames while charging".
