The simple tricks to land you an upgrade on your next flight… and it might be time to ditch the joggers

With first class and business class both coming with a hefty price tag, how can you negotiate a free upgrade the next time you fly?

FLYING can be both an exciting experience and a stressful one.

While you may be looking forward to sunnier climes as you board your flight, sometimes travelling long-distance in a busy economy class section of the plane can be less than relaxing.

But, with first class and business class both coming with a hefty price tag, how can you negotiate a free upgrade the next time you fly?

Booking site has revealed how any ordinary traveller can up their chances of bagging a complimentary upgrade the next time they check in.

Usually, an upgrade is offered when the cabin you have purchased a ticket for has been overbooked – but there are a number of things you can also do to increase your odds.

Dress well

Random selection on a computer is normally the way upgrades are given, but dressing well can also better your chances of a higher class seat.

Skyscanner suggests: “Ditch those scruffy jeans and the t-shirt with last night’s dinner stains down the front.

“Instead, polish those shoes and wear your Sunday best.”

The company also recommends a friendly smile to warm up hard working check-in staff.

Travel alone

Cabins are not usually overbooked by much – so travelling in a big group isn't an ideal way to get an upgrade.

Those travelling for work will likely be alone and well-dressed, ticking two important boxes on the upgrade list.

If you’re holidaying alone, it can’t hurt if you mention that you’re travelling for a special occasion, birthday or anniversary, either.

Volunteer for a different flight

Volunteering for another flight can mean you’re offered a better seat in return for swapping.

Skyscanner says: "Airlines can sometimes ask for volunteers to miss their flight and go on a later one.

“It might not be convenient, but if you don’t mind too much you might be able to negotiate for a guaranteed upgrade.”

Travel at the right time of year

Flying during school holidays is normally ideal for parents - but it won’t help you when it comes to bagging an upgrade.

Booking a flight outside of popular holiday periods means it's more likely there'll be room in business class.

But, it’s worth remembering, economy will still have to be full before check-in staff will start upgrading people.

Other tricks to bag an upgrade

- Be nice to check-in staff

- Be a frequent flyer/loyal to the airline

- Check your emails for any last minute upgrade offers

- Don't check-in online

- If your flight is overbooked and you're asked to wait, voice your displeasure
