This compares with just one in 100 in the capital, according to analysis by GP Online.

All practices across England have now been inspected at least once, with 4 per cent rated “outstanding” and 84 per cent “good”.

Some 9 per cent were found to “require improvement” and 3 per cent were deemed “inadequate”.

Dr Richard Vautrey, from the British Medical Association, said: “There has been a long history of lack of investment into the infrastructure of practices in London.

“What this demonstrates is the essential need for long-term sustained investment into general practice right across the country.”

Professor Steve Field, chief inspector of general practice, said: “Over 1million patients in England currently receive care from practices that we have rated outstanding.”
