Passengers on a British Airways flight this week faced a five-hour delay because the airline didn’t have any toilet roll or complimentary headphones.

According to reports, the plane was due to set off from Gatwick Airport for Barbados at 1.40pm on Sunday, but didn't leave the tarmac until almost 7pm.

The plane landed in Barbados at midnight on Sunday, severely delaying the return flight to the UK.

has reported that the flight delays could see BA out of pocket by hundreds of thousands in compensation claims.

According to the newspaper, the problem started because the plane had been inadequately prepared for the flight by third part handlers, leaving it sitting on the tarmac for almost two hours while extra items were brought in.

Passengers waiting to take-off began to complain about the delay on social media, with one woman called Annabel Cliffe tweeting, “Delayed with no idea of departure for wrong headphones!! Really??”

Another passenger called Bill Murray added:"Utter shambles BA2153 can't depart due to bog roll shortage."

But safety guidelines then added to the delay while the new goods were being assembled, because the cabin crew and pilots had pushed into overtime.

Because they were unable to continue with the flight, another team had to be assembled at the last minute, adding nearly three more hours to the delay.

A British Airways spokesperson told Sun Online: "We are sorry customers were delayed after some of the many items needed for the flight weren't loaded on to the aircraft.

"We gave customers refreshment vouchers so they could get something to eat and drink in the terminal and we got them away on their holidays as soon as we could."
