If you are keeping your milk in the fridge door you have already fallen at the first hurdle as the guide instructs us that dairy should be grouped together on the lower and middle shelves and not in the door – which is the warmest part of the fridge.

The helpful guide is designed to help readers minimise food wastage, maximise space and keep food fresher for longer.

All foods that don’t require cooking are best kept at the top of the fridge for example deli meats and leftovers.

While the lower and middle shelves should house dairy products like cheese, milk, yogurt and butter.

The guide recommends that raw meat and fish are kept on the bottom shelf to reduce the risk of cross contamination.

The drawers are the perfect spot for stashing vegetables, salads and fruits, which should be kept in their original packaging.

The door shelves – a.k.a. the warmest part of your fridge – should play host to those items which are unlikely to go off as quickly like jams, condiments and juice.

In addition they also suggest that you regularly thaw and clean your fridge – using a toothbrush to get into awkward nooks and crannies.

If you're not sure what foods you should be keeping in the fridge at all, let alone where to put them read our ultimate guide here.
