Dad makes miracle recovery after doctors give him minutes to live – after hearing his son’s voice
A DAD who was given just minutes to live says listening to mobile phone recordings of his son inspired him to live.
Paul Honey's family were told to expect the worse when he fell into a coma just after Christmas after catching a deadly form of pneumonia.
But, incredibly, just 26 days later he was back home in Turf Hill, Rochdale, reports
Everyday the dad-of-one was laying unconscious in intensive care his wife, Casey, would play him a message from their son Korie.
It is those messages that Paul, 28, says helped him pull through.
He said it was the thought of Korie, who suffered meningitis as a baby, that inspired his remarkable recovery.
He said: "For the past six years I have watched Korie and all the times he’s fought and thought I’ve got to do the same to be there for him."
Before his illness Paul would hit the gym several times a week.
He went to Oldham Hospital on Christmas Day complaining of flu-like symptoms.
He was diagnosed with pneumonia and two days later his lungs collapsed and he was rushed to the critical care unit.
Doctors wanted to take him to Wythenshawe hospital for specialist ECMO treatment - a heart and lung bypass support machine - but he was too ill to travel.
Instead, the specialist team were hurried to Oldham with the machine.
Fearing he might not hang on for long enough, medics told Paul's family to come to the hospital and prepare for the worst.
Casey, 27, said: "We could see from the doctor’s face how serious it was.
"He told us Paul could have just minutes to live. It was surreal, like something out of a film."
Luckily, Paul clung to life for long enough and doctors were able to begin his treatment.
But he still only had a one in four chance of survival.
Just when things were looking hopeful, two days later he suffered kidney failure.
It took 11 days for Paul to full regain consciousness and in less than a fortnight, to the amazement of doctors, he was able to go home.
While he was in a coma he missed Korie's sixth birthday and being best man at his brothers wedding.
He still faces a long road to recovery as he struggles to walk and suffers with short-term memory loss, but he says he is determined to get back on his feet.
