Bulgaria, Colombia and Romania are among the cheapest places to go on holiday this year
84 destinations around the world were judged on their prices for accommodation, meals, drinks, taxis and local attractions
Fancy an exotic break this summer but don’t want to do lasting damage to your bank account? The answer could be to book a city break in Sofia, Bulgaria.
According to new research, the Bulgarian capital is the cheapest holiday destination on earth, followed by Cairo in Egypt and Cartagena in Colombia.
The airport transfer company has released their annual report on the cheapest and most expensive destinations across the world.
The looked at costs for accommodation, meals, drinks and taxi fares, as well as sightseeing bus tours and popular local attractions.
Of the 84 places that were examined, Zurich was the most expensive overall, costing on average £170.43 for a hotel, food, drink and taxi journey per person per night.
The same experience in the cheapest location of Sofia was an average of only £38.21 per person.
In second place for value was Cairo with the package costing £39.09, although tourists are advised to follow government guidelines on travel to Egypt because of recent terrorism concerns.
Third on the list was Cartagena in Colombia at £39.70, Bucharest in Romania was fourth at a cost of £43.87 and Antalya was fifth with a total of £43.97.
London comes 12th in the ranking, costing an average of £121.41 per person.
The destination with the priciest accommodation prices was New York, with rooms costing an average of £183.73 for one night’s stay per person, compared to £37.36 in Sunny Beach, Bulgaria.
Meanwhile, the price of a three-course mid-range meal for two was Makkah in Saudi Arabia, where it coast on average £9.76 per person, followed by Havana in Cuba at £10.58 and Cairo in Egypt, which cost £10.67.
The best place to enjoy a cheap pint of beer though, was the Philippines – where a beer will set you back 38p.
On the other hand, if you’re visiting Dubai you could be in for a shock with the average price of a bottle of wine coming in at £30.64, and in nearby Bahrain, cocktails can cost up to £18.06.
