And it’s tempting to whack up the heating when the cold weather hits - but you could be unknowingly addings hundreds of pounds to your annual energy bill.

The reminder comes as .

The gas and electricity supplier today announced bills will be going up 7.8 per cent from the end of March - adding £86 a year to bills.

British Gas also announced an extension of its price freeze for millions of customers until August this year.

But experts have insisted that households should not wait to switch suppliers as they could still save hundreds off their energy costs by shopping around.

It follows an increase by EDF Energy and Npower - who have both announced rises for millions of customers from March.

Three more ways to save money off your energy bills

Shrink your bills, not your clothes
Around 90 per cent per cent of a washing machine's energy expenditure is spent on heating the water, so if you wash your clothes at 30-40°C rather than 60°C you're saving significant amounts of money.

Heat your home with cooking
Leave the oven door open after cooking to let the heat warm your kitchen. The oven might give off enough heat for you to adjust your thermostat, a far more efficient use of that stored heat than throwing it out of your home with an extractor fan.

Turn the pressure down
A high-pressure power shower is a great luxury to have but you'd be surprised how much hot water they can use – sometimes even more than a bath.

HOW YOU CAN CUT YOUR ENERGY BILLS

DESPITE British Gas promising to freeze prices for millions of households around the UK, consumers could still cut their bills and save money.

Around 70 per cent of people are on bog-standard expensive standard tariffs, when they should be shopping around for a cheapest deal. If in doubt, call your provider and call other providers to ask them what their cheapest fixed tariff is.

Better still, use a comparison website, like Energyhelpline.com, uSwitch or MoneySupermarket to find the very best deal for you.

By switching providers you could save hundreds of pounds a year. Bear in mind that the amount you pay for your energy varies depending on where you live
