In 2008, 13-year-old Charlie was described by his gran as a funny guy when he appeared on the stage of the UK TV show.

Although fresh-faced he was cheeky even then, offering a couple of jokes which were written by him and his dad.

Although he got through to the next round, the budding comedian didn't have a totally smooth time of it.

Judge Piers Morgan said his jokes were terrible but he delivered a confident performance.

Amanda Holden agreed with Piers, adding that Charlie had "funny bones".

Judge Simon Cowell offered: "We've had some rotten comedians on this show, but you're the only one who's made me laugh and told jokes that I could understand."

The young boy reached the semi-finals but failed to make it through to the final.

After the show, he attended the Sylvia Young Theatre School at weekends and appeared on several comedy shows.

He got his major break when he joined soap Hollyoaks, with his first appearance on April 2 2013 as Robbie Roscoe - a "troublesome new student".
