The average weight of egg shells have fallen by 6.1 per cent – down from 185g to 174g in the last year, research by IRI UK claims.

While the average price per kg has soared by 18.1 per cent, according to Kantar Worldwide.

Trade magazine, The Grocer said: “Brits should start saving early for Easter this year, as shrinkflation and changes to supermarket promotions threaten to hike the cost of the UK’s annual chocolate binge.”

Mondelez International, which is behind the Cadbury’s brand, told The Grocer that its prices would remain “static” this year.

Nestle, which makes Rolo, Smarties and Aero told The Sun Online that it has no plans to change the size of eggs this year.

A spokesperson added: “There are also no plans to change prices although consumer prices are ultimately set by individual retailers.”

However, analysts looking at prices and sizes across brands and non-branded egg products disagree.

Earlier today, the manufacturer behind dozens of household brands, Premier Foods, will be putting up prices due to a weaker pound and higher raw material prices.
