IT’S been a year since David Bowie passed away, and fans around the world are paying tribute to the late musical legend.

So long Starman: It’s been a year since David Bowie passed away and fans have been paying tribute on social media, but British Gas seemed to have cause offence with an ill thought out tweet

David’s widow Iman posted a sweet picture of the pair to social media as she prepared for the anniversary and fans are using the hashtag #RipDB to pay their respects.

But one company’s ill thought out attempt to join in on the collective outpouring of grief has caused anger.

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, a tweet from the British Gas account discussed the death of the legend, but fans have accused the company of trying to “hijack” a hashtag to boost their marketing.

The tweet, which was sent at 8am on January 10, read: “Morning all. A year today we lost a pop icon David Bowie, time flys don’t it? We’re here till 10pm if you need anything. Thanks, Paul ”

Whatever British Gas worker Paul’s intentions were, the tweet was received badly by fans.

Some labelled the message “tacky”, “bad taste” and “the worst tweet I have ever seen.”

Another user replied saying: “Go home British Gas, you’re drunk.”

Responding to the criticism, Paul followed up his original message with another apologising for any offence caused.

The second Tweet read: “Hey, David Bowie meant so much to me.

“I didn’t mean to offend anyone & I only wanted to pay tribute to a master songwriter & true icon ^Paul”
