RICE is a staple food in many people's diets, but cooking it perfectly can be a fine art.

Under-cooked and it's crunchy, overcooked and it becomes a porridge-likes mush, people have struggled to cook fluffy rice for years.

Luckily, users on Quora, a website that allows people to ask and answer questions, have revealed the easiest and most successful ways of cooking rice to perfection.

The answer to the question "How does one cook rice properly?" that received the most votes was simple.

However it will require a small purchase. According to users, a rice cooker is the best way to cook rice.

They cost on average between £15 to £20 in high-street stores and allow you to cook rice that never sticks to the bottom of the pan.

"It's so much easier than any other method I've tried," wrote Cliff Chang.

All you need to do is wash your rice, add water until the waterline is twice as high as the rice and turn on the rice cooker.

"Delicious rice! You can tweak a little bit if you like your rice fluffier or firmer," he added.

The amount of time you leave your rice cooker on can vary depending on the brand of rice cooker and type of rice you are cooking with.

Another user, Susan Shao also gave some advice on how to cook rice with a rice cooker.

"When using a rice cooker, I follow these steps and the rice always comes out perfectly."

Her methodology varied depending on whether she was making sushi or not.

"If you're not making sushi, wash the rice by rinsing it in cold water with your hand, making swirl motions three times. If you're making sushi rice, repeat this process 10 times instead of three.

"When you add rice, the general rule of thumb is half a cup of rice per person.'

If you don't have a rice cooker, fear not.

Jireh Tan also responded to the thread with tips on how to cook rice in a pan.

The first step is the same as with a rice cooker: wash the rice.

Jireh recommends using a ratio of 1 to 1.5, rice to water.

His method begins by bringing water to the boil and boiling the rice with the lid off for two minutes.

"Place the lid on the pot, reduce heat to lowest possible. Simmer for another eight minutes," he continues.

"Take the pot off the heat. With the lid on, let the rice rest for another 15 minutes.

"Remove the lid and fluff the rice, allowing any excess moisture to evaporate."

To ensure that the rice doesn't burn and stick to the bottom of the pan while it is resting, Jireh adds that the lid of the pan must not be removed as it will allow vital steam and moisture to escape.
