When one of our favourite stars leaves a soap, it can often leave us mortified, while others go unnoticed.

New research from has found which characters soap fans would most like to see return to their screens – as well as those the nation is happy to consign to TV history.

In the poll of over 1,000 Brits, Coronation Street's Becky McDonald topped the list as the soap character we would most like to see return, following her dramatic exit from the cobbles in 2012.

While other soap stars the public want to see grace their screens again include Eastenders hard-man Grant Mitchell and Corrie’s Janice Battersby - who came second and third in the poll respectively.

Grant Mitchell, played by Ross Kemp, briefly returned to Albert Square earlier in the year to confront his younger brother Phil – but it seems us Brits are still yearning for Grant to make a more permanent return to his old stomping ground in Walford.

Janice Battersby, played by Vicky Entwistle, left Corrie back in 2011 when she went travelling with her boyfriend, but more than one in five soap fans would love to see her back in Weatherfield.

However, the results were bad news for Emmerdale and Hollyoaks, with none of their characters making the top five.

Bottom of the list is was Emmerdale's Steph Stokes - with only four per cent of people surveyed saying they’d like to see her return to the soap.

Other characters that haven’t been missed include Hollyoaks’ Luke Morgan, played by Gary Lucy and Justin Burton, played by. Chris Fountain

Commenting on the study Simon Jones, Commercial Director, at WhichBingo said: “Here at WhichBingo we all love the soaps and we too would love to see feisty Becky McDonald return to Coronation Street.
