Dutch food truck is selling ‘My Little Pony burgers’ made from HORSE meat
Dutch restaurant ‘The Unwanted Animal Kitchen’ uses meat from horses employed at a local fairground in Slagharen
HOLLAND is famous around the world for many reasons – the abundance of windmills, their superior tulip-growing skills, the legalisation of cannabis… and now horse burgers.
A food truck in Holland has made itself unpopular with both animal lovers and tween girls by selling a My Little Pony Burger made of REAL horse meat.
The mobile restaurant called ‘’ is run by chef Babbe Hengeveld, who uses meat from horses employed at the nearby fairground in the town of Slagharen.
When the animals are too old to work, they are sent to the local slaughterhouse and the cuts are then sent to Hengeveld to make into hamburger patties, which are sold as a dish for £12.
While many are horrified by the menu option, the chef claims that she is simply making use of meat that would otherwise go to waste.
She claims that the meat is tasty and full of protein, but says that most people are put off ordering it because they feel guilty about eating horses, preferring a beef, chicken or lamb burger instead.
The food truck sells a wide range of meat, including smoked goose breast, pigeon meat and boiled crayfish, but it is the horse burger that attracts the most attention.
Hengeveld told website: ‘For some, horses will always be seen as pets in the same way dogs are.
‘Cows and chickens, in many Western cultures, aren't kept as pets so they're okay for food.’
As a result, the horse patties can sometimes be so unpopular that she is forced to throw the uncooked food out because no one wants to buy it.
