The reason this works is explained by the clever boffins at ASAP Science, in a fascinating video.

As the video explains, this trick shows the exact position of your blind spot.

It goes on: “The cells at the front of the eye translate light into signals that are sent to your brain.”

It explains that they are missing at the point where the optical nerves and blood vessels connect to the eye, “so anything at that point in your vision you can’t see.”

The video goes on to explain other optical illusions including the image of a grid with several black dots, which are almost impossible to see at once.

There is also a flashing rectangle puzzle which is so freaky it will blow your mind.

The two rectangles appear to flash out of sync until coloured blocks are placed either side, and then they appear to flash together.

But move the blocks a tiny fraction and they are out of sync once more.

There’s also some amazing tricks of the mind using words, which have you reading a different sentence to what is actually on the screen.

Instead of taking in every detail to be 100 per cent accurate, which would cause “brain overload” your brain makes assumptions.
