Christmas cards place traditional nativity scenes in war-torn Syria to raise awareness for the conflict zone
A portion of the profits will go to charity
A CHARITY has given Christmas cards a makeover this year, by placing traditional nativity scenes onto a backdrop of war-torn Syria.
Nonprofit organisation Doctors of the World hope that releasing the satirical festive illustrations will remind people that “tis the season to give a damn”.
The Biblical narrative begins as Mary is shown making her way across the rubble-filled streets of Aleppo, Syria on a donkey.
While the pictures show the birth still taking place in a manger, the walls of the room have been damaged as a result of bombing.
The next card shows Mary and Joseph watching over newborn Jesus as a missile is launched into the air above them.
The final illustration shows the Three Wise Men looking up into the sky where planes are dropping rockets.
On their website, explain: “Today we unveil our 2016 Christmas cards that starkly juxtapose vintage biblical nativity scenes with modern-day photographs of conflict zones across the Middle East.
“The cards, with names including ‘Not So Silent Night’ and ‘The Star of Bedlam’, were designed pro bono by advertising agency McCann London and feature photojournalism from Press Association taken over the last year.
“Rather than making a religious statement, these images seek to remind the public that this year war has forced millions from their homes, and they really need our help.”

Executive director of Doctors of the World, Leigh Daynes, said: "This is completely at odds with the humanitarian crisis that the region faces today.
"This Christmas we’re asking people to see the realities that we see of the war-torn Middle East, and share some goodwill with a donation to help us give medical aid to people in desperate need.”
The four limited edition cards can be purchased for £10 from Doctors of World online shop, with part of the proceeds supporting the charity’s humanitarian work.
