TOO LITTLE, TWO PLATES?

Mumsnet users divided over children’s portion size – what do you think?

Some argued that there's not enough on their plate

A CONCERNED mum has asked the internet if she has been piling too much food on her children's plates after being scolded by her mother-in-law.

In the photo she posted, there were vegetables, breaded chicken and two sticks of potato in the meals she had prepared for her kids, aged three and six.

Alongside the snap, the Mumsnet user said: “My son is on the 75 centile for height, 20 for weight.

“My daughter is 50 for height, 25 for weight."

She added: “As a family we are very very slim (I'm 5'7 and weigh just under 8 stone). We're very fit, gym, sport etc

“My mil (mother-in-law) saw this and was appalled. Said it was way way too much.

“My children would be peckish an hour later if they didn't have this kind of lunch (it's the weekend, hence all the breaded items!)

“My son is 6, my daughter 3.5.”

The majority of Mumsnet users agreed that the amount of food on the plates seemed about right for kids that age.

Many pointed out that if her kids were active and weren’t classed as overweight, that the parents had nothing to worry about.

One internet user advised: “I think you should relax -  if they are eating this amount and are a normal weight, it’s fine.

“And it’s none of her business.”

Another agreed: “Looks fine to me, plenty of veg on the plate.

“Kids are great at telling you if they are too full/don’t want it.

“Ignore, they’re your kids!”

Although the concerned woman was told off by her mother-in-law for the portion sizes, many even suggested that there wasn’t enough food on the plates.

One said: “I was thinking it doesn’t look enough”, while another asked: “Does your Mil have the appetite of a bird?”

As Mumsnet users seemed pretty divided over the issue, many pointed out that portion sizes vary from child to child.

One parent suggested that an active child with a faster metabolism would probably need to have larger meals.

She said: “My DS (darling son) is 6 and that would only be a snack for him and he’s so skinny you can see his ribs.

“It depends on a child’s metabolism as well.

“He’s always hungry so for me that is not enough food.”
