An empty mental asylum and floating ghost ship… these are the most haunted places in America
A photographer reveals the ghosts he has encountered taking snaps of the haunted areas
Welcome to the United States of AAAAHHHHH-MERICA with a tour of the US' most haunted spots.
The objects and places pictured include a ghost ship on the Ohio River, an empty mental asylum, a deserted dental practice and a closet full of children's dresses in an abandoned house.
Johnny Joo is a 26-year-old photographer from Ohio who braved a trip to each of the spooky sites.
He said: "The scariest place I have been would probably have to be Forest Haven Asylum, though that is due to its dark history.
"I have found detailed records from asylum patients and incidents happening through the wards.
"I have also found many people's personal records and social security numbers left behind. I'm not sure which one of those is creepier.
"You could say I'm a bit strange, but I feel completely at peace being in places like this. It helps me to create the exact feeling I really love to create through my work.
"I've seen a few strange things over time, and felt what seems to be the presence of a past life still lingering.
"Many people expect every building to be haunted by something, when that is not truly the case.
"There are plenty of creepy areas in this world, but I will always love digging for the historic pieces and putting together the puzzle of some past life I never knew."
House of the poor of Knox County
Built in 1875 to house the poor of Knox County, this Victorian era beauty was actually ranked as one of the largest buildings in not only the country, but the entire state of Ohio - this title was not held for long however.
The structure operated as a poorhouse for 75 years.
An abandoned room from the 1940s/50s
A suit remains hung as if the previous owner simply vanishes one day to never return, leaving it in this abandoned house. It is possible that he had seen an untimely death, and nobody was left to take care of the home.
Joo said: "Wandering these hallways, I swore I could hear footsteps following lightly behind me."
A mental asylum in Georgia
Life for the inmates was incredibly sad. The only human interaction these people had would be meal time.
A tray was placed on rotating metal plates that swivelled in and out of the room on each other, so the doors never had to be opened.
Dentist room in Forest Haven Asylum
Patients were figured to be so crazy they would never know the difference if the district took them in pretending it was a holiday.
The asylum would provide every service that would be needed outside of the complex including a church, school, dental and medical as well as the numerous living spaces.
The graves of the abandoned asylum
When these patients would pass away, their bodies were buried throughout a field with unmarked graves.
The graves stretch over a thousand yards of the property.
Ghost ship
This ghost ship has sat at the edge of the Ohio River, Kentucky for over 30 years.
It has been left to rust away and become completely overgrown.
Haunted dresses
Not only do the dresses move around on their own as if someone has been wearing them, there has been talk of a child seen in the window during late evening.
She looks almost as if she wishes to play with the neighbourhood children. Adults have never been able to see the girl, but say their children constantly point her out as if she were standing in the window.
Forgotten playground in Pennsylvania
Those who visit say that they sometimes they hear the spirits of playing children - children who passed before ever being given the chance to grow.
A couple who had visited during the night recalled seeing headless children playing through the dark.
Haunted house
While this home may look abandoned, a very rugged and disturbed 'man' still calls this home.
While there have been attempts to remove him from the property, he refuses to go. He welcomes them by pointing a shot gun.
Abandoned swamp home
Abandoned in Thistle Utah, this lonely home on an otherwise empty stretch of road remains sunken in this pond.
During April of 1983, a massive landslide took out the entire town, washing it downhill.
It has been said that a family had been trapped within this home during the time it sank, and one person was not lucky enough to make it out.
It's not just America who has its homes and public areas haunted by ghosts, the UK has it's fair share of lingering ghouls too. In fact, is your train station one of the UK's most haunted stations?
