It was 83 per cent more than Asda Smart Price Vanilla Flavour Ice Cream, which contains just 7.9g per 100ml.

Campaign group Action on Sugar, which carried out the research, called it “shocking”.

It also made worrying findings on branded breakfast cereals, yoghurts, biscuits, cakes and sweets.

Among them was McVitie’s Mini Gingerbread Men — aimed at kids — which had 38 per cent more sugar than Organix Goodies Gingerbread Men Biscuits.

The group found Kellogg’s Coco Pops Croc Prints had 42 per cent more than Bear Alpha Bites Cocoa cereal.

Campaign boss Jenny Rosborough said: “Some people do read the labels, but others are not as health conscious so will not be aware of how much sugar they are giving themselves and their kids.”

The group’s nutritionist Kawther Hashem added: “Our survey clearly shows companies can easily make products with much less sugar.”

Waitrose, which donates royalties to Prince Charles’s charity to use his Duchy Organic name under licence, said of its vanilla ice cream: “It’s an indulgent product not aimed at children and which our customers buy as a treat.

“We sell other vanilla ice creams with much lower sugar content.”
