Revenge porn victims reveal what happened when their naked pictures were leaked
REVENGE porn victims have revealed the scarring effect of having their intimate pictures and videos being leaked online, or circulated by text message.
From suicidal feelings to social ridicule and seeing the snaps being used to Catfish others on dating apps, the long-term problems of revenge porn linger – according to the Reddit thread.

Posting on Reddit, Dreya Noya said: “When I was 14, a senior in my high school convinced me to send him a nude picture.
“I wasn’t very popular, pretty lonely, nerdy, antisocial – honestly I was just flattered and excited that a senior was showing interest in me.
How common is revenge porn?
* 36% of people have sent intimate pics to a partner.
* One in 10 ex-partners have threatened to share a risque snap online.
* This threat is carried out 60% of the time.
* That means just over 2% of people will have their naked pics exposed.
“So I sent him the picture, and he proceeded to send it around the school.
“People would stop me in the hallway and say things like ‘I've seen you with your t*ts out!’
“I was called a whore a lot, I was ostracised and ridiculed... it made me really suicidal for a while.
“It never occurred to me that I could tell an adult what had happened, it never occurred to me that an 18-year-old distributing naked pictures of a 14-year-old was a crime.
“I just assumed it was my fault for being a ‘slut’. So I bottled it up for years, did my time in high school, started dressing goth/alternative because it made me feel a little more powerful and like less of a sexual object.
“I finally graduated, and realised how detrimental the effects of having a nude photo of myself be shared around school had been to my self-esteem and self-worth.
“I genuinely believe that this topic should be covered during early sex-ed classes.
“My life would have been so much easier if I had known I could talk to my mum or a teacher about the mistake I had made in sending the nude picture, and that the guy who distributed it had committed a far greater crime than my sending it to him in the first place.”
The law on revenge porn
* A new law on revenge porn was introduced in the UK last April.
* It is now illegal to share a 'private sexual photograph or film' without the consent of the person or people in it.
* But the sharer also needs to show malicious intent to cause distress, i.e. by turning a private picture into a public one.
* Someone found guilty of revenge porn can be jailed for up to two years, as well as receiving a fine.
* There is no law against receiving the images, i.e. if a friend sent you one via text, but if you send them on you are committing a crime.
Genoohh added: “A man threatened to share pictures of my younger sister if he didn't get more nudes.
“I contacted the guy and called his bluff. I told him my sister's underage so go ahead and share the photos and have fun with the child pornography charges. Never heard from him since.”
While Winona K revealed: “While we were together, my (now ex) boyfriend posted pictures of me on a swingers’ website.
“Apparently he was swapping them with other men for pictures of their wives/girlfriends too.
“When I found out I was very upset, because I did not even know he had these pictures.
“My face was showing in them and I would never have consented to them being put online for anyone to see.
“What’s worse is that many of the people he had sent the pictures to were in the local area, so I could easily have been recognised.
“I made him take everything down, but I can’t do anything about copies held by other people. His excuse was ‘I didn’t think you’d mind’. We broke up shortly afterwards.
“I investigated taking legal action but apparently because they weren’t posted with ‘malicious intent’ I had nothing on him.”
And God Damn You_Bernice said: “A guy I dated did this to me after we had a nasty breakup. He kept them on a flash drive (USB memory stick) and threatened to blackmail me with them.
“Took him to court, got a restraining order. Don’t be afraid to take legal action against this sort of behaviour.”
Eternal Addictions added: “I was 19 and had recently run into an old f*** buddy. We hooked up again and started hanging out.
“When I told him this was nothing more than sex he got p**sed and took a video of us without my knowledge.
“A few weeks pass and a buddy tells me there is a sex tape of me being shown around the railroad (our biggest employer in this town).
“I didn’t bother to do anything about it. The damage had already been done, so who cares.”
While 18Jay95 said: “Stupidly sent them to an ex, he sent them around and they ended up on Tumblr.
“At first I was a little annoyed but I’m not that bothered anymore. The worst bit about it is people using my photos on dating apps”.
