But well before YouTube numbers blew up, there was Charlie McDonnell, the first UK vlogger to hit 1million followers.

The YouTuber, and his channel  has since grown to almost 2.4million... here's all you need to know about the original social media star...

Who is Charlie McDonnell and what is his background?

Charlie was born on October 1, 1990 in Bath.

He has two younger siblings, brother William and sister Bridie.

He first started broadcasting on YouTube in 2007 when he was just 16 years old and on June 15, 2011 he became the first ever UK YouTuber to gain 1million followers.

The vlogging sensation hangs out with a lot of other social media stars, he used to present weekday YouTube breakfast show Cereal Time with Jimmy Hill.

What does Charlie McDonnell make videos about?

When Charlie first started out as a 16-year-old student he vlogged about everything from 'Drinking Ketchup' to video games and life in general.

His skills as a musician would also feature on the channel, as well as away from the screen, with Charlie featuring in a variety of bands.

The young star even release his debut solo album in 2010, but has since announced that he has no current plans to release new music.

Since then, Charlie has turned his hand to creating "Fun Science" shorts in order to explain the world of science to the internet generation.

Charlie's posts are few and far between these days, with the star uploading roughly once every two months.

How many subscribers does Charlie McDonnell have?

The 26-year-old is steaming ahead with close to 2.4 million followers on his YouTube channel.

The star in prolific on all forms of social media with more than 300,000 followers on , more than 650,000 on  and more than 200,000 on .

What else does he do?

Charlie has now launched a science book, off the back of the popular segments on his channel, the YouTuber named his debut book, Fun Science: A Guide to Life, the Universe & Why Science is so Awesome.

Following his success in 2011, Charlie was offered a place on Celebrity Big Brother - but turned it down.

 

Charlie seems to have made the most of his position as YouTube royalty and has supported several campaigns and charities including UNICEF, Cancer Research and the Home Office's "This Is Abuse" drive to educate people on the importance of consensual sex.

He's also spoken candidly about suffering from anxiety and depression.

In one video he said: "I've suffered from anxiety all my life and depression - from about 16 - which is coincidentally when I started YouTube...

"Don't know whether those two are connected, but pretty sure they are!"

He's also created videos with big name brands such as Sony, Disney, the BBC and Tommy Hilfiger and lent his voice to the lead role in video game Volume, created by Mike Bithell.
