Food sharing app that hooks you up with nearby grub for FREE

THROWING away leftovers or food that has gone bad before you’ve had a chance to eat it is not uncommon.

We chuck out 7 million tonnes of food and drink from our homes every year in the UK and more than half of this food could have been eaten.

This is costing households up to £700 a year, according to LoveFoodHateWaste.com.

A new free food and drink sharing app called could change that.

It connects you with neighbours who have surplus food, in an attempt to cut down on food waste.

The app, which launched earlier this year, is free to download from Apple’s iOS App Store or the Google Play Store.

Almost 100,000 people have downloaded the app and it has over 20,000 people using it everyday.

How does the app work?

In order to pick up a bargain you need to register with the app and then start searching.

Once you spot some grub that you’d like, you click on it and then request to pick it up.

You arrange collection with your neighbour directly.

It works both ways, so if you have leftovers to spare you take a picture, upload to the app and include a brief description - including the use by date - and provide pick-up details.

A lot of the items are free. However, users can choose to add a price. If they do it must be a minimum of 50 per cent off the original price.

The idea is that instead of surplus food going to waste you can offer it to your local community for free.

Apparently, the app works best in big cities where it’s already established, such as London, Bristol and Edinburgh.

Is the food manky?

Not at all. Those who’ve using the app say there is really nice food to be had.

Lots of local businesses have starting using it too - so, you might be able to pick up something that would have been in the shops, rather than your neighbours leftovers.

We had a quick search in our area and there were pineapples, reduced fat peanut butter, apples, bread and baby food all on offer in our postcode.
