This is why Newcastle has been named the Greggs capital of the UK

The city has more than three times as many stores as the national average

THOUGHT all the North East had going for it was fog, whippets and hen parties? Think again.

Newcastle has been named the Greggs capital of the UK, according to a recent study.

The city has a whopping 29 outlets – that’s the equivalent of 9.9 stores for every 100,000 people - meaning you’ll always be in walking distance of a steak bake.

You’re three times more likely to come across a Greggs in Newcastle, with the average figure nationally standing at 2.7 stores for every 100,000 people.

West Dunbartonshire in Scotland came in second with eight stores - the equivalent of 8.9 for every 100,000 people, while Gateshead finished in third place - with 17 outlets at a rate of 8.5 stores per 100,000 people.

Allerdale was fourth, followed by Glasgow City, Bridgend, Cardiff and Sunderland.

Edinburgh and South Lanarkshire finished the top 10.

A Greggs spokesman told Chronicle Live: “Newcastle is our birthplace.

"John Gregg started out in Gosforth delivering eggs and yeast by bike in 1939.

“We’ve grown a lot since then but Newcastle is still and always will be our home.”

Across the UK, there are 1,747 Greggs according to the chain’s online store locator.

Scotland has the greatest number of Greggs per head compared with England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

There are 239 Greggs in Scotland at a rate of 4.4 per 100,000 people.
