SWAP your train for a plane and you could save up to £117 on travelling between major UK cities, according to new research.

Passengers travelling from Glasgow to Cardiff can save the most.

It sounds crazy but sometimes taking a plane rather than the train is cost-effective.

While those going from Glasgow to Bristol have the most to gain, saving up to £117 and £116 per person, respectively, according to the research by .

It also found that while the cost of train fares are on the up - with a 1.9% rise likely for 2017 - domestic flights are dropping by 3% year-on-year.

Its research is based on travel in between locations in October using SkyScanner.net for flight prices and trainline.com for train tickets, comparing the cheapest options available.

It’s not just money that can be saved, time is also a key factor in people’s decision to choose the sky over the rails.

Travellers going from London to Inverness by plane instead of train would save 14 hours and 22 minutes, in addition to the £96.25 saving.

While passengers going from Glasgow to Bristol save 13 hours and a whopping £116.80.

It’s not the first time that we have written about how flying can be cheaper than getting the train.

In January, we told you about how blogger Jordon Cox, also known as The Coupon Kid, flew home to Essex from Sheffield via Berlin to save £8 in train fares.

Cox, who writes a blog for MoneySavingExpert, travelled an extra 1,017 miles to save a mind-blowing £7.72.
